I moved to a new state in November of 2019 to start a new job with a decent salary. The company had a very generous PTO policy and health insurance was great. Less than 4 months later the world came to a standstill.
Not my company, though. I work in the medical field, and we didn't miss a beat. At first, they did a great job of supporting us. Additional $1/hour, 120 bucks a day in childcare credit for anybody with kids. That lasted for 3 months.
Then the surge came. Not the covid surge, though. The surge of expectations, increased caseload, additional documentation. People started quitting, and nobody was hired to replace them. We received laptops so we could work at multiple clinics and complete all the additional work at home. Morale plummeted, and we were told our raises were being cut due to the increase in pay, despite my company accepting $137 million in emergency relief.
I tried to keep up with the increased expectations for months, and kept falling further and further behind. Then the company implemented a 2 tier management policy, and hired a slew of managers. They ran reports from the comfort of their homes, and told us we needed to 'evaluate our workflow' to become compliant with company expectations.
I received a call from my manager a couple of weeks ago saying that “HR had been notified” about my slip in work productivity, and they were creating a Performance Inprovement Plan for me to be signed the following week. That was the last straw for me. I submitted my resume to 3 prospective employers this past Sunday evening.
By Monday morning I had someone reaching out to me and had an interview later that day. By Tuesday I had a job offer. $3,000 raise, with an additional $5,000 annually in bonus potential (clearly outlined and easily attainable goals). A quarter of my current caseload, to boot.
I had my meeting with my soon-to-be former manager, signed my acknowledgement of my receipt of my Performance Inprovement Plan, and submitted my 2 weeks notice.
So many companies are banking on employees being too beat down to look elsewhere. It's a toxic relationship, and I finally had enough to break up with my former employer. Screw you, Fresenius.
It's not me, it's you.
