So, as the title says, I got fired last week for not doing unpaid overtime.
I recently left my previous job to join a small mortgage broker company. There was only around 10 people in the business including the managing director. I was on a basic salary, no commision, no overtime, no benefits. I joined them in hopes (and promises) of growing with the company. I was wrong.
With them not paying overtime my day to day routine was come to work, do work, go home. Occasionally I would do a bit of overtime here and there to help them out. All unpaid of course, on a number of occasions the employer would say “I don't pay you overtime so you should go home” to which I wrongly said it was fine and helped anyway.
Anyway, 2 weeks ago to another colleague I said to them as a passing comment “I come to work early but I don't start until start time Becuase Im not paid overtime”. That was taking way out of context, so much so that they literally took me to a meeting the next day and fired me for that literal quote, nothing more. Didn't care about any of the overtime I did for them unpaid, but Becuase I made a comment that I won't do anymore overtime they fired me, with immediate effect.
I'll be damned if I ever do anything for any company unpaid going forward
