To preface, I live in a small town. My town therefore has a lower cost of living and lower wages. I drive about an hour out of my way everyday to the city nearby for my job because the pay is better. I work at a coffee shop that has a starting pay of around 11 an hour with supplemental tips. Recently, our head manager left and hired someone new to take her place. She didn’t bother to train the new head manager and we are expected as baristas to train him. We have a high turn over rate of college kids and it’s basically a sinking ship. I’ve been looking for a job for two months now and I finally found one I can’t turn down. They wanted me to start immediately so the best I could do was provide a weeks notice.
I told my old manager this today as well as the new manager. My old manager informed me that she would be withholding my tips due to me not giving a courteous two weeks notice. I don’t think this is legal? I live in the state of TN and I just wanted to make sure that this is illegal before I pursue this.
