Antiwork

I have to be in the office two days a week just to watch everyone come in an hour late and leave two hours early.

So, I’m writing this on the last day of this miserable job. When I applied, it was pitched as the kind of job that would be flexible: you can work from where ever as long as the work gets done. Well, turns out that was a crock of shit because two months after we moved into the brand new office guess who starts getting reprimanded for not showing up more? This kid. My manager told me that I have to be in two days a week or else I’d be fired. I live an hour and a half away from the office. I am always here by 7:50 at the latest. My boss who gave me the reprimand? It’s 8:30 and he still hasn’t walked in. I wake up at 5 am to make it to work on time, but you can’t get here on time and you live 15…

I wake up at 5 am to make it to work on time, but you can’t get here on time and you live 15 minutes away from the office? The best part is, the whole place is like this. Directors aren’t in until 9 usually. Most of the staff rolls in around 8:45. But then the amazing thing is everyone leaves at 3-3:30. Not a single person is here when I leave at 5.

The whole thing just pisses me off because I’m supposed to come in to “bond with other people,” but it is really hard to bond when there is literally no one in the damn building. People just come for meetings and to save face and then they leave as soon as they can. Yet I get to drive here twice a week just to sit in a 15,000 square foot office by myself the whole time. Maybe I worked too much retail, but shorting your workday by six hours each week feels dishonest to me. Also, the fact that directors are doing it bothers me. I could stay at home and have just as much social interaction with my coworkers as I do in the office.

This whole bs of company culture is just dumb. The only culture I see around this place is the kind of culture that thrives off of hypocrisy and incompetence. I could experience that from the comfort of my own home, and at least I’ll have my cat there to witness it all with me.

I’m so glad I’m done with this place. Also, the office looks dumb. I’m sorry you pay rent on this space, but it looks like every other office I have ever been in.
