I horrified my French colleague

I'm currently working in France as part of my PhD research at the French equivalent of the National Institutes of Health. I also have a full-time job in the US which is actually pretty generous and I enjoy my job. I was having lunch with my French colleague and she asked how much vacation time I have at my job in the US. I have the unfathomable amount (by US standards) of 5 weeks of use it or lose it time that we are absolutely required to take (again, a good job, especially by US standards). I have the unfathomable amount (by US standards) of 5 weeks of use it or lose it time that we are absolutely required to take (again, a good job, especially by US standards). She seemed confused so I explained that I actually have an unusual amount because I thought she had heard (rightly) that the US has much less. She explained that five weeks is far, far too low and that is the bare minimum here and would be considered a bad offer.

She asked what is the minimum vacation time and when I said there is no minimum but 2 weeks is about the norm for professional jobs and nothing usually for many people in the service industry/restaurant/etc. I then had to explain health insurance, at-will employment, no/unpaid parental leave. Then explain that expressing wanting any of these things makes you a lazy person in many people's eyes. We are taught to be happy with this and enjoy it. Laying it all out for her made me even more frustrated with our system and it really drove home how absolutely unhinged our system is.
