I light of the recent firings at Google, I have a simple question

I have fulfill my end of the social contract or I'm homeless, in jail or dead. However, companies can throw thousands of workers into the street because they get to increase their bottom line. So why should I take my obligation to be a good worker/citizen seriously when society and the companies that run it demand I be a good worker/citizen can, and most likely will, treat me with zero respect?
