To catch everyone up, I work in a major theme park in a city that would not exist without theme parks. Even as a supervisor working almost full-time and on a “premium” wage I cannot afford even a low-income apartment in my city anymore. With a young son and the crippling economic situation I can’t see a light at the end of the tunnel without a simple raise.
Here at the park, we have been pushing alcohol more and more when we previously did not have it at all in our gift shops, we now do. This comes with quarterly training going over how we can be arrested or sued for improper serving when we did not sign up for a job with this risk and have not received any additional compensation for taking on this absurd risk to our lives and livelihood.
That being said, alcohol vending comes with a lot of responsibility, along with the right not to serve anyone for ANY reason besides their race, sex or religion. Shouldn’t a large theme park chain be more responsible with their alcohol vending by paying their vendors enough to make up for the risk? Or at least live in the city?
My plan is to encourage everyone who sells alcohol not to, with the reasoning of “just cause” or “we need to be paid more” but I am not sure where to start or how to go about this. I would really appreciate advice and guidance in doing this! I think it could make a major change for many people I care about here at work, including myself.
