I work in hospice as a coordinator, but part of my job is also as a Representative Payee that is elected by Social Security who manages the funds of individuals who lack the capability to pay their rent and tend to their basic needs. I am the only individual in the company who has this job responsibility, which means when Social Security notifies my boss that they would like to review our company, I am fully responsible for conducting the review and providing all documentation needed to prove the adequate management of each beneficiaries’ funds. My boss made it very clear that this review was top priority and excused me from all of my other job responsibilities to prepare for the review.
After the review was complete, it was time for me to catch up on the week’s worth of work that he had excused me from. Today after clocking in, my boss verbally expressed his concerns that I had fallen severely behind on my job duties in front of the rest of the staff, to which I accepted and went straight to work to catch myself up. I then overheard him expressing his feelings about my “lack of competence” to my coworkers and refused to acknowledge the fact that he had excused me from all my other work duties in order to prepare for the review as well as conduct the review.
Nobody likes to hear their boss badmouthing them behind their backs, and to be honest it upset me. I approached my boss to request a private conversation with him, to which he very loudly declined. I intended to speak with him to diffuse the situation and brainstorm solutions to the problem, but he declined my request for a conversation so I got in my car and left without anybody noticing and without telling anybody.
This boss regularly treats his employees like dogs, screaming at them, interrupting them, bad mouthing them, degrading them, all sorts of things. I don’t think I want to come back tomorrow.
