This is just a rant.
I gave my job two weeks notice today. I have found something a lot closer to home that pays a little more so I decided to take it. I’d been at my current job for almost three years and it was time to move on.
I sent the owner a short, but professional email thanking him for the opportunity and that my last day would be two weeks from today. I also asked how he intended to pay out my remaining vacation and 401k.
He made a special trip into the office this afternoon to talk to me. I didn’t tell him where the new job was, it isn’t his business. But I did tell him that I’m leaving because I spend 3 hours a day in the car getting to work. He was shocked that I would want to take hours of my life back and kept telling me that it had to be something personal, that no one just up and leaves a job like that. I was told I was “betraying the family” by leaving and that I must not give a fuck about any of them because of the way I worded my email. I was told to “get the hell out because we don’t want anyone here who doesn’t care”. I said goodbye to my coworkers, told them exactly how it went down (because they didn’t escort me around to say goodbye) and headed out.
The moral is, you don’t owe them anything, they’re not your family, and the second you start thinking counter to them, you’re a traitor. Now I have two and a half weeks before the new job starts. I’m getting paid for my time and all of my vacation. I think I’ll enjoy that.
