Another horror story from your fellow MRI tech…..
Last night apparently one hospital in my city didn’t want to get the on call MRI tech to scan on a weekend night. Instead they sent their patients to me. It caught us off guard. The supervisor for the move was nice and I was nice.
However, nurses and doctors and unfortunately my manager didn’t care about safety.
After we scanned the first patient they sent. They sent another one without discussing with us. The nurse stated that the patient cannot answers questions and the family member didn’t answer the questions but however she wants me to use the form. I said without a signed form from the sister of the patient this scan isn’t going to happen. I got multiple phone calls and threats asking my name and threatening to report me. Yelling and screaming. The supervisor for the move called and I had a breakdown I said it’s disrespectful to get treated like this while I am doing my best to keep the patient safe. She felt my pain and said I appreciate you. Few minutes later she showed up and said I apologize for all the negativity you had to deal with tonight I called the sister she is coming I left MRI form for her to fill out so you can do your job right I am sending an email about you to your manager to tell her how an amazing tech you are.
Few minutes later the phone rang. A nurse from the floor said the sister isn’t coming and that I have to deal with it.
I got the sister number and she said she was on her way and this “nurse” told her that she doesn’t have to answer our questions. I apologized to her and I explained my need for the form. She said she will come and I told her that I will meet her personally to get this done.
One nursing supervisor called and took my name.
Few minutes later my manager (who is a recent promoted ultrasound tech) called and said she doesn’t give a crap about the form and I should do what I was told.
I said the sister is coming. She said we don’t need her. I said I am confused the sister wants to come why you all don’t want her to come. She said nurses can take a word of mouth from her. After lecturing me about how I am doing my job wrong.
The sister showed up she filled out the form and guess what. The patient does have an implant that nurses didn’t mention on the first form.
I brought this to the radiologist attention and he said no MRI until we get more info.
Another nurse supervisor who knows me called and asked and I told her the error in the form and she said thank you for taking care about patients safety please report everyone you talked to tonight so we can prevent this.
The floor called again and I told them about the safety concern one of the doctors said we are bringing the patient to MRI doesn’t matter if you like it or not. I said you can bring the patient but I am not scanning them until radiologist clear them.
Another doctor who is newly graduated (doesn’t know the difference between MRI and xray) came and yelled at me. I said I am so glad you are here I printed my conversation with the radiologist for you. I read it out loud for him. He said the patients sister is lying. I said how do you know that if the patient can’t speak???? I am so frustrated you always come down here and keep pushing for things without thinking about safety, you guys lied about the safety form you need to be truthful You could kill someone. I stood there waiting for an answer and all what he said was its all your fault its a trend that’s happening in your shift I am reporting you to the highest manager in the hospital. He left the floor called again another doctor said we are bringing the patients down I said no you are not the radiologist said no. I don’t come to the floor and tell you what to do you need to be respectful and let us do our job. She said what do you need I said I need info. She said she will ask the nurses to do that.
I callee another manager and I explained to him whats going he said don’t worry about it you done your job just report all of them.
My coworker said that we need to go to the Vice President of the hospital to report but I had bad experiences with management and I am new.
I am tired of this and I couldn’t find a job yet. Maybe I will end being a traveler.
