I turned down a kitchen job because they wanted me to pay for the uniform

Can anyone explain to me why exactly it's MY responsibility to pay for the uniform? if they require it, Shouldn't they pay for it? Also fuck any kitchen that says “You need your own knifes” I LIKE having my own knifes, but still.
