Earlier this year I asked my job if I could either 1. Work from outside of the country or 2. Take a 3-month unpaid sabbatical. They said no to both.
Unfortunately or fortunately, I had already booked 3 months of airbnbs and flights out of the country. 🤷️
This is the first time that I don’t have a lease or anyone/anything holding me down and I figured I had to cease the opportunity. Also, I don’t think my current job is taking me where I want to be and I’m feeling really burned out.
I’m wanting to/planning to quit my job in September, 3 weeks before I leave for my trip. I have enough saved to cover me for the 3 months and a solid amount in my retirement that if I desperately need to, I can pull from. I figure this time will be good for me to finally take a real break, one I don’t feel like I’ve had since I was 6 and had begun studying for my first standardized test. I also do want to pursue my hobbies, learn some tech skills to pivot careers, and possibly start a side hustle.
My biggest worry is that when I come back at the end of the 3 months, I won’t be able to find a job and those 3 months will turn into a depressing x months of regretting taking this break. I’m already not getting interviews when I apply to jobs and I don’t think I’m amazing in my current role (still at entry level after 3 years).
Has anyone here taken a break from working? Any success or horror stories, things to consider when doing it?
