I work remotely for a company in the healthcare industry. I make $24 per hour and still live in an apartment with my spouse and kid because we cant save enough for a house in this market. I really liked my job at first, I deal with volume based work and I work at my own pace to complete it, and have other duties as well with generally minimal oversight. I am pretty low on the totem poll with no one under me, which makes it hard because this special project involves talking to people much higher up and having to manage their expectations of the project and constantly act as an intermediary between 2 groups that fight on answers to problems constantly.
I was forced to do this project (my job description does not contain any extra work beyond my daily tasks) by our department head who thinks they are offering me a challenge to rise up to, likely to groom me for a higher position. But I have always just wanted to clock in, get my menial tasks done, and log off to be with my family. I am not a leader.
I am almost sick with stress every day, dreading my manager reaching out to ask for updates that I cant provide because I have no experience managing something like this, and no one cares if I am reaching out for updates because I have no authority.
I don't think it would be possible to just ask to be taken off the project because this company is always forcing us to do other things because sometimes we have low volume and god forbid we are able to work slower or have some down time. Just wanting to do my job is not enough.
I really want to quit and find another job but I love working remote and being able to work at my own pace (aside from the project work), and I am terrified that I won't be able to find something that pays at least this well. (I have no degree)
What should I do? Are there remote jobs out there that pay this well for someone with no degree? Am I just brainwashed into thinking I am lucky to have a job that pays this much because of how our capitalist society is?
