I work(ed) for a small private school in my area.
I'm recently graduated, and I was hired on as a part time teaching assistant, with plans to move into a full time roll as positions became available (this isn't an assumption, this promotion was outlined in my employee contract). I've only worked there for eight months, so about a semester and some change. They would only have me come in four hours a day for Mon-Thurs. Obviously this isn't enough hours, even if my pay was $20/hr. I asked multiple times for more hours, even stating that I would clean classrooms if it meant I could get more hours. I was living paycheck to paycheck and was miserable. During this time I was also unsuccessful in finding other places to work, so I was essentially stuck here. At the end of the spring semester, everyone received an email asking if they wished to return for the fall. I responded stating that I would like to come back, but requested more hours. During this time I was made aware that one of the full time staff was going to be leaving, so I asked if it was possible for me to assume this position under more training. My administration (this is two people by the way) stated that they would speak with the owner of the school who makes all of the final decisions and get back to me before the end of the month so that we could begin training.
Three days ago, I received an email from my administration saying that at this time they were unable to offer me a position for the fall semester. I was confused because I didn't know if this was in regards to the full time position or in regard to any position at all. Within the same day I sent an email to both administrators and the owner of the school asking if this was a permanent decision to not offer me a position at all, or if they had just found someone better suited for a full time role. It has been three business days since I sent them all emails and I have not managed to get a response from anyone.
Was I just fired? I don't even know what to do as this is so abrupt and I don't have a back up plan as I wasn't even expecting to be fired. My performance doesn't reflect being fired, and I got along very well with other staff and students, so I'm not sure how to even respond.
