I was told I would get fired in two months if I didn’t improve my statistics while she talked about how good i was for the team…

Hi everyone, obligatory first time poster! Today, one of the new bosses in my office called me in to an “last minute meeting” to discuss my last month’s work. This meeting was completely unexpected and brought me a lot of anxiety as I had just been in a very long team meeting before and had not seen the notification. I go into her office after a lot of confusion and everything seems fine at first. She is a very bubbly person, so I can’t help but think they hired her on purpose to bring people bad news. She brings up my work in the last month, and how it is below the numbers. She mentions that she hasn’t forgotten the events of the past month (I was in the ER; They changed my project and goals over halfway through the month).

She told me that if my numbers didn’t improve in the next month, they would be forced to put me under an employee improvement plan. This is not what was bothering me, however. During this entire conversation, my boss was telling me that I am a great resource for my team and I have “lots of great ideas” that are beneficial for them. She also brought up how the higher level people in the company were impressed with me.

I just find it extremely ironic that you can tell an employee they might be getting fired soon while simultaneously saying to cheer up and not be sad and to look at the next month in a positive way. Especially after talking about the good things I bring to the company. It just seemed really cruel. I don’t even really know how to move forward, I am just so scared to lose my only source of income…
