Long time lurker, first time poster. I’ll try to keep this as brief as possible.
So I worked for this company for almost 8 years. It’s a North American hospitality chain but I’ll leave it at that.
I worked every department in that place, most of which was in the bar, all through the pandemic, I was the bar supervisor & busted my ass. My immediate boss was amazing, he was a great friend & always fought for us, got me a few raises in my time there.
So an opportunity arose for a huge promotion at the opposite side of the country to run a new location & I applied & got it.
Big mistake. I was asked to do full time hours on the front desk there, as well as overseeing the renovations that were still taking place even though the project manager in charge had left & a ridiculous amount still needed done & I was still expected to carry out my responsibilities as the general manager. I did between 10-16 hours 6/7 days a week for a month & a half, kept asking for help & they’d send someone for a couple days. Also due to the nature of this business I was on call 24/7 basically. We were given a new system that no one in the company had used before & the person who set it up didn’t do it properly & went on vacation on our opening week.
After a month & a half of this I had a complete breakdown & ended up in the ER because I’d been self harming & had suicidal ideations. I’m now unemployed & on anti depressants & in therapy & the more I think about my time at that company the more predatory I realize it actually was.
Companies only care about money & I learned that the hard way.
Take care of yourselves everyone!
