I am a young guy (mid 20’s) and work at a brokerage firm where I am relatively successful. I make okay-ish bordering on good money because of how much overtime I put in. I get to my office between 6:30 and 7:00 in the morning and leave my office at 7:30 in the evening so I can catch the 8 o’clock train which gets me home at roughly 8:30. I work 6 days a week because I flat out refuse to work on Saturday, and will put in between 4-6 hours on Sunday from my home office.
Yesterday was the first day in MONTHS that I was in track to get home at a decent hour. I almost teared up when I deleted my last email in my inbox because I knew I would be able to catch the 6:00 train home. I would finally be able to eat dinner while it’s fresh and hot rather than reheated in the microwave because my family finished eating an hour ago. I would finally be able to take a few hours to actually rest and decompress rather than getting home, eating, showering and going to bed because I’m so exhausted from the day.
My inbox is FINALLY empty and I’m right on schedule and as I’m packing up my things my boss peaks his head out of his office and gives me a smart assed “Done already?!?! I have more work if you need it :)” He then asks me to stay late and handle some clerical work and back office crap for HIS clients, nothing that I should actually be doing. For those of you who are thinking, “Just tell him no”; I would love to do that. But if I do he will stop giving me clients, and that directly impacts how much money I make because a huge part of my salary is commission based. He’s done it before. The best part?
“I need it done by tomorrow”
I know I don’t have half the reason to complain that some other people do because my job could be a lot worse; but I am fucking drowning. I bust my fucking ass for my company every day and at the first sign of a little breathing room, I get more shit pulled on top of me. And by the way- my boss left before me last night. I caught the 9:00 train.
I’ve never posted here before so if I’m misreading the spirit of this sub by ranting about my job then I’m sorry. But no one else will listen to me.
