If you don’t stand up for yourself in the work place, you’re helping them keep others down.

One person on my team has no spine whatsoever. I'll refer to him as SJ, for spineless Jake. They're consistently bending over backwards for this company without demanding more for themselves and whining about it constantly about how they feel undervalued. He does more work than anyone else on the team already by a decent margin yet makes middle of the department income. It would make sense if they were new to the work force but they're 30+ years old. They've been at this company for like 8 years without a promotion. Then our team lead put in their two week notice. Me and SJ are the only people qualified, but I'm also leaving to another department. SJ messages me and tells me they're giving him the lead roles responsibilities. He's going on and on about how much extra work this is going to be. Detailing meetings schedules, workloads, etc…

SJ messages me and tells me they're giving him the lead roles responsibilities. He's going on and on about how much extra work this is going to be. Detailing meetings schedules, workloads, etc I ask him when he's going to be officially promoted and if he got a nice raise. He doesn't know yet.

The next day I notice that he's in the the meetings with the current lead. I thought, oh he's learning it all already, they must be promoting him as soon as the lead is gone.

Next week I move to my new position so I don't stay in contact since im busy transitioning.

Nearly a month has gone by and I get a message from SJ asking me about something unrelated to this post, and I notice he still isn't listed as the team lead in teams/emails etc.

I ask about the promotion, surely they have something set in stone by now.

This spineless idiot has been working them selves to the bone, doing 50-60 hours a week trying to keep up with the responsibilities of BOTH positions and still has nothing in writing from management. “I assume ill be promoted by mid year” He even confessed that during the previous leads final two weeks he took over all responsibilities BEFORE THE GUY LEFT so the previous lead wasn't even doing his job anymore. SJ was doing it.

YOU IDIOT, YOU'VE ALREADY BEEN DOING THE LEAD JOB FOR A MONTH AND YOU'RE HOPING FOR MID YEAR? THATS LIKE 4 MORE MONTHS OF DOING SOMEONE ELSES JOB WITH NO INCREASE IN PAY, NO TIMELINE FOR THE PROMOTION, AND YOU'RE KILLING YOURSELF OVER IT ALL FOR NOTHING?

Anyways my point is that if they're not hiring anyone else for that role and you fuckin die from a heart attack from being overworked, the next sad fuck is going to assume it's normal for that role. It detracts from the staffing of the entire department meaning everyone gets the squeeze put on them. If the company has no push back they will know what they can get away with in the future.

Stop letting yourself get exploited, it hurts all the laborers, not just at your company too. It affects everyone if we don't stand up for ourselves.

If you get a significant increase in workload from your management you absolutely need to demand more money or refuse to accept it. If you're working for someone else's business, not for money, why the fuck are you there?

Jake if you figure out this post is about you. Stop doing the new responsibilities RIGHT NOW and get a promotion and raise in writing, retroactive to at least when the previous lead left. If they refuse then you have let them fuck you. Hard.
