I've been working as a waitress / kitchen staff for a couple of months now. It's a tiny local bar and the waiters make some quick snacks, clean the dishes and serve drinks all in one shift. I actually enjoyed the work, it was chill, tips were nice, and I got to talk to tourists all day. But last month my bosses put me (28F) to work with Alex (19M). Alex is the best friend of the boss' son, and he's as unsufferable as you could think someone would be in his position. He doesn't listen to me, he doesn't work well as a pair, and he constantly badmouths me to the night shift colleagues (because he didn't realise I actually have a good relationship with them and they would tell me what he has been saying). The bosses are very obviously not impressed with his work, and one of them actually told me that Alex had to work with me because “he didn't worked well behind the counter”, which meant that me, as one of the only females working at the place, has now to be in charge of all the dish washing and drink serving and snack making for the day. Alex does not lift a hand to help me and service with him, besides annoying, is also generating less tips because I'm not allowed to interact with the customers on the tables and Alex is not very charming.
He managed to make a temporary chill job into something that I dread going to. I told my female boss several times that we couldn't be paired like this, but I was basically told to suck it up. What nobody in my work knows is that I got approved for my PhD scholarship (yay!) and I will be able to quit in a month. It wouldn't be wise to quite beforehand because I'm saving to buy a new phone. And because nobody listened to me when I said that I wasn't happy with having to work only counters when I was hired as a waitress, I'm also not giving them the courtesy of two weeks. As soon as I can bounce, I'll bounce (no contract, so I'm basically just waiting out for the scholarship).
I know they will suffer because for these past months I've been covering shifts for other colleagues and helping out training new staff. I'm one of the oldest (think typical place that employs fresh out of highschool kids) and my bosses said they trusted me to help deal with the place. Well, you kept this idiot with me when I asked not to, so I will also not pity your situation when I leave abruptly. Also the pay is terrible and there's no fans at the bar, so when it's hot it can be very uncomfortable to work all day behind the counter. So it will be pleasant to quit when I'm able to.
