They literally hired me at $17 to be an office assistant to the new office/HR manager. Phones, filing, and errands were my job description.
But I ended up being responsible for EVERY (factory) employees' attendance. For multiple shifts, in a place open 24 hours a day. (77 hourly employees, including myself, in the exact same pay range)
There is no way to automate attendance, unless they purchase software. So I spent my days pouring over their punches, seeing who was here, late, sick, etc. Many of these employees have similar names as they are related. Such as: John Smith, Johnny Smith, Jon Smith, Jan, Jannie, etc)
And when they don't follow attendance I had to prepare the write ups by hand, in my handwriting, take in a folder to the proper lead, several times a day, every employee knows what's in those folders.
After I became ill in late April and had emergency surgery, I was off for 11 days. I went back to work and it was immediately different. I was written up for making a FILING ERROR ON THE ANGLE OF THE STAPLE? They are suddenly playing christian music-when they know I do not practice and am offended by it. Then…a coworker sends me the Indeed posting of my job, all the things I AM CURRENTLY doing that WERE NOT ON MY JOB DESCRIPTION, for $25 an hour and better benefits.
I walked out. Total retaliation for being out on surgery, I cleaned up the mess the office was originally, from when they had to close for covid and things got a year behind.
And then they realized they had me doing things out of my league and it was time to make me miserable until they could replace me. Remember, HR is my direct manager, I know they won't fire because they do not want to pay unemployment-which I am filing for anyway.
Yikes. I got bills…but if my physical and mental health are destroyed, I would have continued to keep “taking it” like I used to before.
THANK YOU, to all you younger gens, for showing me my boomer parents were wrong, I don't have to take being abused at work, and it is not ok, and not normal. MANY younger people at my job walked out within the first month, which was the first sign something was not right there..
Thank You ! GEN X thanks you!
