I’m afraid to make the leap

Hi everyone.. I've been working at my current company for about 5 years and I've moved up incredibly quickly. I've been given multiple raises and I'm already at the upper end of what my position pays. I make more than other coworkers who have been there their entire 25-30 year long careers. For the past year I've been training at my bosses 2nd company, learning the ropes and taking on extra work. In fact, I'm already taking on the full workload at the 2nd company that is expected of that position.

My hope was that my boss would move me to the 2nd company 100% and cut me free of the 1st company. However, when we had our meeting last week she expressed that since I've shown I'm able to get things done that she'd like me to continue forever working both positions as a sort of “hybrid” postion.

I expressed that I'd rather just do one or the other but it's like talking to a brick wall. So now I'm thinking I'd rather just quit my job and go back to school, maybe spend some time with my kids before they grow up.

My fear though is that once I cut this loose I will never get this opportunity ever again. I haven't earned the title at the 2nd company so I will walk away with only proof that I was able to do the 1st companies work. All of my hard work this past year will be for nothing.
