I like my job, it pays not quite a living wage, at $20-21/hour ($16.50/hour with tips adding up to $3-4/hour on average.) I sit at a counter, and I deal with often more money than I see in a year because I’m dealing with drunk people with fuck you money. It’s Casino work, and there’s nothing wrong with it.
I got poked by a friend with a WFH opportunity that pays the same, but untipped ($21 an hour) that just allows me to work on side projects when I have time. I work Graveyard shift currently, and am asleep during human hours normally.
I can’t leave my current job because I’ve been sort of housed (defined here as not crashing with a friend or parents) for the last year or so, and I’m trying to get into housing.
Housing is just fucking expensive. I can afford up to $1000/month in an expensive metro area. My options for apartments are somewhat limited.
I’d also lose progress towards insurance, and other benefits, in addition to just access to cheap food (the cafeteria at my job is incredibly cheap for food that is pretty okay.)
I expect to continue living paycheck to paycheck despite having very little debt once I am on my own, and really want out of in-person customer service because my state is dropping COVID restrictions and I deal with drunk people who may or may not spread COVID to me. I can’t afford COVID for a week, and my job would require me to get a doctor to diagnose me with COVID to get paid for the week I was out.
I’m just so tired of being on the verge of financial collapse and unable to afford life. $21/hour is great if you aren’t paying half your first check every month in rent.
