I have been working as a remote teacher online since July of 2020. I did the employee onboarding in-person but it was very brief as I had worked with the company in question before. The supervisor who brought me on was amazing, saw how hard I worked and how much students loved me, and instantly worked to help me become trained with new job titles and responsibilities. Before she left, she signed me up for two more training periods because she feared for the stability of my position and hoped that the extra training would offer some protection for me.
The new supervisor immediately put a hold on that training, citing that I was not an in-person employee. I knew it was the beginning of the end. I could not justify a three hour commute (in total) when they have at times struggled to give in-center people sufficient hours. Just being scheduled for a half-day is not a big deal when I'm remote, but it's not feasible when I'd be commuting so far.
I tried to bargain with them, stating that I would be willing to come in-person 1-2 days a week and work remote the other days. No dice.
The kicker to me is that we've had four online students come on just in the past two weeks for OUR center (this is an international company). This was not due to a lack of work availability.
This was because they'd rather have someone who worked there for a month sit there in-person at a computer to help their online students rather than letting me work from home.
We don't matter.
