Reminder to everyone in the Corp world. Do not help out another team without getting it in writing that will be weighed against your end-of-year review and it will get you a full number advancement. For doing your job where I work you get a 3, if you bust your ass and become all things to all people and never say no to anything you might get a 4. To get a 5 you have to be a god, I've had 6 5s over my career.
When I was asked to help out the other team last week I said I need it in writing that I will be rewarded for doing my job and their job too. I said this in front of three of the managers. They said you need to be a team player. I am a team player, I'm a team of 1 me! When the one manager was about to say we act as a family. I asked him, hey Matt I heard that David died of cancer how was the funeral? He said I didn't go. I said that's not something someone who you treated like family when you had your heart attack should have been treated. I remember his wife checked in on you while you recovered over 2 months and you didn't show up for her and his family? Matt just looked down.
So if you want my help write up that document and send it to my manager and HR. I would want 15% bonus at the end of the year and a 15% raise. You're not going to get that, they said, well then your not going to get my help. We are NOT a family.
Today my manager calls me and said what the total fuck is this? So I filled him and he said Jesus jumping christ man do you need a new backpack? I said for what? For the balls, you are carrying? I said I'm done NOT asking for money. He said I noticed that you ask for money all the time in management teams. Hey Jason can you work on this, sure give me 2 more people or OK the overtime for my team? Or I've leveraged superstars from teams that were called troublemakers for wanting code to be perfect and trouble-free with good testing. I've built a team of some really dysfunctional people who do excellent work and we are a TEAM. But I ask them all the time, you want some OT? As a team lead I never tell them.
