I just had to click on one of these knowing it would ruin my day.
I work at an animal shelter. I get paid .30 above CA minimum wage to work with animals. I love my job, but with inflation it’s reaching a point where I’m going to have to leave. I don’t want to, but I’m almost losing money working here.
This article is trying to blame the nationwide shelter staffing shortage on new hires (since 2020) bowing out because they can’t handle the “trauma of increased intakes” and “don’t know what it was like before”.
No mother fucker.
It’s because you pay us a pittance to handle 20+ parvo puppies, aggressive dogs, aggressive members of the public, dying and abused animals, diseases we can take home to our own animals.
I can handle the trauma.
But I can’t handle going home and crying because I can’t make ends meet WHILE being expected to give my all to a traumatic workplace.
“We shouldn’t vilify shelters who can’t pay more.”
I understand funding is an issue, but let’s not pretend our financial advisors are asking the donors for more funds to pay the employees. You’re too busy paying for donor events and dinners.
Don’t ever work a job you love. You’ll work twice as hard and asked “isn’t it about more than money?” When you try to speak up.
