Today I was dragged into the mall by my family. Pleasant outing, we bought some things. My mom loves White House Black Market, so I just waited for her to finish up there. As we were walking out, mom peeped the help wanted sign that the WHBM has on their store. She asked the cashier who had been helping us, and immediately asked about the first nugget of info we would want regarding any job: the fucking pay.
The cashier gets uncomfortable, for seemingly no reason. Like, got caught making love to a potato salad in a Publix-level uncomfortable. She says “uhhmmm i can't disclose that info” with a nervous chuckle. What the fuck? Mom asks again, but the cashier won't budge. We of course talked about it, like “hey that was really weird” type thing. I thought that maybe she was told by management that it's cause for termination/illegal to discuss wages, and that's why she turtled. My mom thought she just didn't want to admit to two shoppers that she's making what's most likely starvation wages. The whole thing was weird, to be sure. What do you guys think about this? This whole “can't discuss wages” shit has gotten out of hand.
