I am an engineering manager at a high tech company. 2021 was…bad. I moved to manage a new team and then 8 people quit. I spent most of the year making what limited changes I could to improve team morale and failed. I ended the year the least healthy I have been in 10 years. I am monstrously unhappy and it is impacting my relationship with my wife and kids.
The company I work for pays well and has great benefits so I decided to apply for internal transfers. I interviewed and got one, my boss approved the transfer and I am supposed to transfer at the end of March. Until yesterday, my director came to me and said he and the director of the new department agrees to delay the transfer until my replacement could be hired.
In my experience this is an 6-12 week process and the number of qualified candidates is very small. In that time the new department can easily fill the roll I am slotted for and leave me stuck.
I am going to escalate to our HR today, but any advice?
