Is there anyone in this sub in the Austin area that wants to do some community organizing? r/WorkerSolidarityATX is for forming unions, providing mutual aid, and generally giving power back to the people!
Even if you don't live here, you may have heard about the kind of businesses moving into the area, and we are deeply in need of shifting the culture surrounding worker's rights and unions. The minimum wage is still $7.25!!
We want to have our first meeting in early July. The main focus will be on the basics of unionizing: the benefits, how to go about it, and the dangers of unscrupulous employers reacting to a union effort. We will also be taking inventory of what hardships local workers are facing and how we can directly organize to lessen those burdens.
Long term we hope to also organize renter's unions and form a mutual aid network, especially to help workers facing retaliation for organizing. Hopefully we will be so successful that we can share the blueprint with other cities! (vastly naïve and unwarranted optimism intended)
Thanks your attention and support!
