Is it legal for my employer to force us interns to be on call without extra compensation?

We are located in New Hampshire, living on site for free, and paid a flat rate of $500/wk. Once to twice a week we have to be on call, and cannot leave the site. We are not paid extra for this, and are expected to be around in case of an emergency. Does this qualify as a freedom restriction and should we demand compensation?
