Is it legal for my (ex) employer to tell me to not tell my former coworkers that I was fired?

I was fired today and my employer said to keep this “confidential” and to not tell my coworkers that I was fired… which sounds pretty illegal. I've had some coworkers come to me and say they're sorry to hear that I'm not working there anymore, and I've decided to be kinda covert and say “it wasn't my choice” instead of just lying or not saying anything. I just want to tell people so bad, they should know! But since they're giving me the last two weeks of pay (even though I won't be in the building) I'm kind of scared to say anything until then (since after that they have 0 control over me lol). Thoughts?? Word spreads fast there.
