Is it legal to prohibit employees from discussing salary? I just want to vent…

I went to a restaurant that was hiring and they told me to do a trial the next day. I arrived and started working in the kitchen, no one greeted me, and with signs they told me to talk to the Hispanic guys. Even though I was talking in English the whole time they still thought I was not able to communicate, but oh well I rather speak in Spanish. Anyways, while I was cutting some vegetables I was thinking that it was bananas that they didn't tell me the hours and pay rate. I am making 12 dollars in my current job, I just wanted to know if switching was a good idea. I finally found the hiring lady and asked her about the hours/payment. The answer was: “I can't tell you until the end of the day (11 hours) because if you don't like it then it is…

Anyways, while I was cutting some vegetables I was thinking that it was bananas that they didn't tell me the hours and pay rate. I am making 12 dollars in my current job, I just wanted to know if switching was a good idea. I finally found the hiring lady and asked her about the hours/payment. The answer was: “I can't tell you until the end of the day (11 hours) because if you don't like it then it is not necessary for me to tell you the rate”. What does that mean? I told them I was making 12 hours in the other restaurant and that if they didn't pay as much it didn't make sense to switch places. I asked 3 times and every time I had the same answer “I can't tell you until the end, because we need to see if you like the work or not” What am I supposed to say??? OH MY GOD WASHING DISHES AND CLEANING SHRIMP IS MY PASSION!!!

I asked the Mexican under the table workers and they told me that they were makin 5 dollars per hour! screw those **** employers taking advantage of hard working people!

I went to the hiring/owner lady and said “sorry, I guess you'll pay around 7 dollars and that is not good enough for me” The first thing she said was WHO TOLD YOU THAT??????? And of course I'm not going to throw my homies under the bus, so I said that I figured it out considering the average wage around the area. By then I was pretty upset because no one wanted to tell me how much they were going to pay me, so I said “I guess I'm not the candidate for your restaurant, bye!” And the lady was like WAIT! let me talk to someone. She calls the owner or something and tells me: “because you have to pay income taxes we will pay you 2.600 for 6 days a week 11 hours each day. I said, well, that's around 9 dollars an hour so bye bye.

Her great counteroffer was: well, here you can work more than 40 hours per week! I don't think you can work as much in other places!

Seriously? I want to play music and watch birds at my local park on the weekends, I don't dream of working more for 9 dollars per hour. I said thanks, but bye.

They called me 1 hour later to raise it to 13, and I said no thank you, I don't trust you at all.

ALSO, WHY CAN'T PEOPLE DISCUSS THEIR SALARIES!!!! maybe because they are hiring under the table, but I hate to see how they take advantage of hardworking people just because they can. End of the rant.
