Is it wrong to ask what the pay is at a job interview?

Had a job interview today and at the end he talked about the benefits of the job but didn’t mention the pay. He asked later if I had any questions and after asking a few about the company I asked what the pay is. He seemed thrown off and explained the pay to me and I told him what my minimum payment would be to accept the position. Haven’t heard if I got the job but I hope I didn’t screw myself by asking that. Why is that even a question though??? We all literally only work to get money, so why wouldn’t that information be readily available??
