Posting because my boyfriend told me the way my tips are distributed is not right and my boss is stealing from me.
So basically I work in a really tiny diner in a very small town. We have about 8 tables total. It is only me and four others that work here. On any given shift it is usually just me and the cook running the restaurant.
At the end of the night I count the money in my tip cup. My boss has told me to split it 40/60 between the cook and I respectively. I told my boyfriend this and he was very frazzled as to why the cook would get anything over 10% as they make more $/hr than I do, and they aren’t even the ones serving the customers.
This being my first serving job ever, I did not even question the way we distributed tips. I am now starting to worry maybe I have been giving away what are MY hard earned tips.
Recently, we have been very busy. To compensate, both of our cooks have been working together on the same shift. So it is now me and two other people. At the end of the night I am now splitting my tips 3 ways instead of 2. My boss has told me now to split it 50/50 with them. So it is no longer 40/60. If I make 50$ in my cup one night I only really take home 16$.
I work minimum wage by the way. I also didnt even mention the debit machine tips. I am never told or shown how much they were. She just splits it accordingly. I really trust my boss and coworkers. They are good people to me. I feel conflicted about this and cannot tell if the way things are being done are right or wrong.
Am I being greedy? Or am I just naive and been getting ripped off this entire time? Please let me know
I also didnt mention my boss works as our other server and her husband is one of our two cooks. Dont know if that matters
Edit: I am Canadian
