I've been working as an electrical helper for a staffing agency for seven months and have recently been hired by a commercial electrical company.
Florida is a bit of bs state in terms of wages for this kind of work, honestly most work really.
Anyways this new company isnt too bad. They have a good insurance plane, PTO and other benefits even though I'm being paid $15 an hour. The other good thing is they work on big projects like hospitals so there is some consistency and not too much travel. (I hate driving)
In August they offered to start my 4 year apprenticeship and pay for my schooling. This sounds good, but my biggest qualm is a paper there making sign for it. On the paper it states “if you are terminated for any reason other than a lay off period, you agree to pay back the tution and materials for the schooling in full for the amount of time you have been enrolled in the program.”
Is this legal to do? If I wanted to accumulate debt I would have went to college. I think I'm being emotional about the whole thing, but this 'clause' makes me feel like my freedom to move to a different job or state is improbable.
