I recently started working as a package handler at a large company and I do not have my senority yet and am not in the union yet. They make new hires call in to see of they're needed for the day. They have you call in at 3 am. Usually if you're not needed you go back to sleep.
Earlier this week I called in and they said I wasn't needed so I went back to sleep. They tried to call me in 45 minutes later but I didn't hear my phone. So they were short staffed that day. The manager acted like I did something wrong though I never agreed to be on call. Usually I'll answer the phone and go in if someone calls out because I want to work and I want hours. The way the manager has handled this has rubbed me the wrong way.
So this morning I call in at 3:30 and was told to call back in ten minutes and I call and they tell me they don't need me but I have to call them back in an hour to check if anybody called out. I am not being paid for this. I am pretty annoyed by this.
I am not going to make a stink about this right now because I do want the job and I should have senority in another month of so. Then I'll be in the union and have a schedule.
When I was hired I was told I'd call in and they'd tell me to come in or not. I wasn't told I'd have to wake up for an hour and a half to see if they're covered. I feel like I'm being punished because other people called out? Am I looking at this wrong?
