I’ve been in a new job for a month. I love it because I work from home almost the entire week and am able to get all my work done quickly and some days I don’t get anything at all so it’s pretty chill. Compared to my last job where I was overworked and never had a free moment. I think there’s kind of an unspoken rule that almost everyone who has an office job, depending on the type of job, never has enough work to work the entire day depending on the time of the month and some people have micromanaging bosses who want you to look busy and other people have bosses who are cool and understand this. Our busy time is the end of the month and I work my ass off but other than that the rest of the month isn’t busy.
I always get my work done on time and aside from the times I have nothing to do don’t slack off. Yesterday at the end of the day my boss asked me if I had an invoice batch to submit which I usually do every day but today nothing came in. I told her no, she then asked “What were you working on today?” Cue panic. My entire almost 10 years of working I’ve never been asked this question by a boss. I almost lied but I was honest and told her I was waiting on a piece of work we usually get around this time but don’t have yet. She seemed fine and said “yeah we don’t have it yeah blah blah” “ok bye see you tomorrow.”
It’s hard for me to tell what it is because I’m still quite new so I’m wondering if she was just asking maybe to make sure I didn’t need help with anything but it came off a little micromanagey to me. I’m really frustrated because I haven’t had the best luck with bosses but don’t want to put my bad experiences on this if maybe it wasn’t what I thought it was. I only have to go into the office once a week but it’s a stupid open office plan and I sit adjacent to my boss with no privacy which is spiking my anxiety today. Guys, what do you think?
