It’s always been confusing to me when people celebrate “creating new jobs”

How is creating new jobs a good thing? If those jobs weren't there before why do we need them now? Yes, I understand more jobs means more opportunities to find employment and people need employment to survive. But isn't it an incredibly short-sighted celebration? It should be obvious that as a society we should be striving towards fewer jobs. If all the work that needs to be done is being done, why should people be forced to artificially find more things to do? It's absurd. The movement towards some sort of universal basic income is so necessary.
