I work for a big retail chain. You know which one, it'll be in your top 10 guesses. Last week, the shift runner who was supposed to do an Open-Close was too ill to come in. Gave me plenty of notice, I just didn't check my phone and wandered in anyway. No biggie, I just had breakfast and went home.
Fast forward to my next shift today, and as soon as I walk in I hear the Store Manager and most senior Manager complaining about the fact that the other Manager didn't come in. Me and said Manager are new, and younger, whereas these two are in their mid-fourties at best. And for a solid hour, they're complaining back and forth while I'm getting swamped by customers, and I know full well they know this as they can see the entire shop floor on the CCTV monitor they're sat in front of. One of them mentioned how they're still working with two broken bones and that's when it sets in how utterly brainwashed they've been by retail corporations.
Not only are they angry that a co-worker wouldn't come in to serve customers food and drink while ill, one of them boasts that the company doesn't pay them enough sick pay to be able to recover from multiple fractures. What the fuck?
Even worse, the Store Manager is doing the work of 3 people of their position, and has been for about a month now. You know how the company had compensated them for their time? A metal pin. No pay rise, no extra leave, no bonus. A badge to help them advertise the company even more. And they're proud of it. It's so… sad.
