Antiwork

Just a rant about events that are currently unfolding and why I think it shows that it is urgent that we start fighting the only war worth fighting : the one against the people exploiting us and planet earth just to become even more disgustingly rich.

I'm sorry if this is off topic, but I believe this is important. also, sorry for long post (and sorry if this seems kind of obvious, but I needed to get it out of my system). Amazon workers died in a warehouse because they were not allowed to leave. American companies would much rather see people die than pay them a liveable wage, American education would much rather see its teachers burn out and its students go into immense debt than not make huge profits. Same goes for American healthcare, you know what I mean. The sugar industry paid scientists to shift the blame from sugar to fat. Kellogg's still poisons people with sugar despite knowing it causes obesity, heart diseases and so on. Shell and Exxon paid scientists to discredit studies that showed climate change was happening, and are still trying to put the blame on individuals while promoting…

Shell and Exxon paid scientists to discredit studies that showed climate change was happening, and are still trying to put the blame on individuals while promoting lies such as 'natural gas'. The IPCC's last report says 3 billion people will be affected by climate change in the next 50 years. Russia is Bombing civilians thanks to help from Trump. Trump was put in charge of the USA thanks to an intense campaign of disinformation which was made possible by the fact that Twitter, Facebook, Amazon (Twitch) and so on let these troll farms thrive because they created engagement and ad revenue. This is also part of the reason why Brexit could happen, and why the Antivax movement became so popular. the US wages war in the middle east for the profits of a few armament companies and leaves cities torn apart, annihilating decades of social and technological progress.

I could go on forever, citing anecdotes or big stories, such as the union carbide scandal, or the time François Fillon got arrested for tax evasion just as he was almost going to be elected president of France. He also denied that French agriculture was causing 'green tides', a proliferation of deadly algae which killed people, because he was receiving fat money from the meat industry lobbies.

All of this happens because capitalism completely fails to do anything else but generate short term economic gains for an insignificant fraction of the human population, at the price of literally everything else. Under capitalism it is profitable on the short term to exploit other humans to their deaths, ruin lives, ruin the planet we live on and ruin democracies.

Of course, you and I know damn well that this is not sustainable. I don't think I need to remind you of how screwed we are if the climate keeps changing or ecosystems continue collapsing, how many more people will die to diseases because of shitty healthcare, and how many people will live shitty lives if we let oligarchs like jeff bezos get huge fuckin yachts and dismantle bridges with money earned by exploiting everything else.

So now, imagine you are an engineer specialized in a certain type of machinery. One day, you receive a call about a machine that is malfunctioning. Your client says 'it makes weird clicking noises', so you decide to go on site to see for yourself. You arrive at the warehouse where the machine is still running, and indeed, it is making weird clicking and grinding noises. This has attracted a crowd of curious factory workers, since anyway, the automaton is no longer producing the parts needed for the production line to work so they have nothing better to do. After inspecting the industrial apparatus, you come to the horrifying conclusion that it is about to fail catastrophically. It is about to blow right up because a faulty gear is preventing the machine from releasing pressure. In the process, it will kill you and all the curious bystanders watching you. You jump on the emergency stop button, but nothing happens. What do you do now? let the machine run wild and blow up, killing everyone? Or do you throw a spanner in the works in an attempt to jam the machine's spinning gears? Sure, the machine might need weeks of repairs and the client might be angry that you broke the machine so bad, but you know what the right thing to do is.

This is just a dumb little story to make a point about earth : the earth machine is about to fail catastrophically, maybe not killing everyone living on it, but at least ruining or destroying so many lives (billions? who knows.), human or not. Earth is like a big machine, with gears that interlock and interact with each other. A few of those gears are broken and are about to destroy the entire system : capitalism, greed, etc…

We need to start doing more radical things, like throwing a spanner to stop the gears from turning. We need to fight and remember there is no war but class war, especially today. look at the Russian soldiers : some of them are just kids who got in the army because the army promises lot's of money for their service, they don't have a damn clue what they are doing until it's too late. We're all in the same boat and it's time to mutiny against the old white fucks who know the ship is sinking but can't be bothered to give a hoot.

We can live without capitalism, and we WILL live without it some day because it is simply not sustainable. human populations are expected to stabilize, so economic 'growth' will become irrelevant.

I think ditching capitalism and human greed is one of the greatest challenges humans will face, and as I mentioned, if we fail things will be pretty bad, but if we succeed, I just can't imagine all the awesome things we will accomplish. Progress, space travel, love, safety, education, meaningful lives and jobs, health and happiness for everyone…

TL;DR : It's high time we fight for a future where oligarchs don't ruin the planet and people's lives just to add an insignificant fraction of wealth to their huge pile of cash.
