Let me start by explaining I am a certified medical coder. When I was hired, I was told I should be billing out 100-200 claims per day depending on which provider I was working on(some of my providers perform surgery, which takes more time to code) and what time of the month it was. At the end of 2021 we were bought out by a larger practice. At the beginning of July our metrics were updated to 200 claims per day. No matter which metrics we’re looking at, I have always at least met my metrics, for the most part I exceed them. I will also say we are pretty consistently between 4-6 weeks behind from an A/R standpoint. I’m currently billing the second week of June.
Enter in my supervisor (the same one I’ve complained about previously). My supervisor, who is also a certified coder but committed to doing the least amount of work possible, talks a lot about “we need to really stay focused and apply ourselves”, which as I’m sure y’all can tell is corporate speak for “I want all this to be done yesterday”. Being the supervisor and being a coder, she could absolutely step in and help to lighten the load to help us catch up. Does she? No.
The reason I’m posting is I read another post in this sub about actually being rewarded for hard work, and it made me think of who my supervisor wants us to act like.
Last time we were understaffed/behind, the former team lead (who has since gotten a better job) literally worked 10 hour days, 6 days a week, with no breaks and no lunch. The way she described it she didn’t even get up to go to the bathroom, until I was hired. What did she get for killings herself for the job. A certificate of appreciation. Not even an actual certificate—a black and white COPY of a certificate with her name hand written on it.
And supervisor wonders why me/my team can’t be bothered to do more than slightly exceed our production standards?
