So, just to preface, I have 2 bachelor's degrees and a partial masters, but have learned from various attempts, that I really don't like doing the things that use my degrees. So, I've spent most of my adult life doing manual labor, which I enjoy.
Before I got my current job, I applied and got an interview for a job at the local post office. It was advertised as full time, $30/hr with full federal government benefits. Sounded pretty good.
I show up fifteen minutes early for the interview. Wind up waiting about an hour. Once I finally get in the room with the local Postmaster General, he asks me to tell him about myself. Following seeing my resume, cover letter, etc. I am uncertain what else he would need to know. So, I said a few things from those and asked 'what would you like to know?'
He responds 'no, that's not how this works. You need to impress me. You don't seem like you want this job.'
Umm… okay. Not sure what made you feel that way. I am interested in this job yadda yadda yadda.
So, we keep talking (by now we're just talking, there's no way I'm working for this person) and he seems to like my personality. Is still clearly an asshole, but we're just talking.
It comes out that the job isn't full time, isn't even set part time. He wants a walking mail carrier that can be on call literally any federal working day always. No benefits. For $10/hr when he feels like he needs me. And there is effectively no possibility for promotion.
Okay… so you're telling me that you are a boss that is comfortable lying, being openly antagonistic, and wasting your employees' time. That's what I've learned from this interaction. Why would I ever want to work for you?
In a way, the best kind of boss is the boss that doesn't really prepare for an interview on their end. That just show you who they really are in the interview.
