just got my pto request rejected for my bday

I started this job near the beginning of the year, at the time I had asked if I could take about a week off to go on a trip for my birthday and I got told yes a million times, I was giving ~8 month notice. But it turns out when you work in logistics you don't even get your “paid holidays” off because I have to be at home at my computer in case something goes wrong. Well my coworker and I were talking about the 4th of July in teams, and my boss sent out a message reminding us that he's about to go on vacation for 8 days.

Since I started this job I've gotten injured and because of all the medical bills and the injury itself I already knew a trip for my birthday was off the table. But I still wanted my birthday off to just have a day to relax, I work 50+ hours a week and I'm burned out, my time not at work lately has been spent at doctor's appointments and physical therapy.

But the company's annual conference starts on my birthday and he'll be going out of town for 4 days so I can't take even a day off. The worst part is he passed the buck onto my other boss, saying “it's up to her since I won't be here” right after he said there can't be two people out on the same day. My boyfriend already asked his job for the day off and got it approved, so he'll have the day off at least.

So I guess the lesson I've learned is don't take a salary job for a place with “unlimited pto” because you could wind up working way more than 40 hours and never getting the “8 day vacation” your bosses get

The only “vacation day” I've gotten was for my younger sister's college graduation and the night before when I reminded everyone in teams he said “great that means tomorrow is going to be harder for everyone”
