Man oh man I have seen some stuff on this sub. And I saw every last bit of it at that meeting. I recently started working at a Travel Centers of America in an undisclosed location(can't dox myself), here on my second week I was told I had to come in for a meeting. The only specified topics of said meeting where “chain of conmand” and “wages.” Now I have a long drive home, so I only had about 3 hours of sleep before the meeting, but I was lucid enough to know that it was going to be interesting. And boy was I right. Right out the gate the two main managers of the store start off by complaining that too many people are calling HR and their boss to complain about how much they're making. And so they launched into a whole spiel about how they can't do anything about it- that they've already done all they can, and that it's all up to some “vice president” as they said it. Now I started out working here on around $12 an hour, which isn't the greatest, but it's good enough for me as a college student living at home. But the only thing I heard the people there saying was how much complaining had gone on to get them to that number, because apparently just three years ago they had only been making $8 or $9 an hour. And not a soul in the room seem to be concerned that they weren't making enough. Every single person that was talking, which wasn't everybody, could only badmouth people who wanted a pay raise. And after that little section of the meeting had finished, it moved on to complaints that nobody was doing their job. Now I can't help but wonder, does it occur to them that people work for money? And that an understaffed store will never be run correctly? I just thought I should share this circus with some people who would understand. It's not just the government and the corporations that are keeping workers in America at such low standards of living. It's also some of the workers themselves, because people who just stand back and allow- no not allow- praise this kind of behavior, they are part of the problem too. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. I'm going back to sleep now.
