I’m only 22 but in the five years I’ve been working I’ve never been fired or let go. But today, 5 weeks into a job providing call center support for student loans, not even 2 weeks in actual training, I was let go. Apparently the further extension on Student loan Forbearance was the reason. It was going to be at least a 3 month position, so while I knew it wasn’t going to last forever I figured it would at least be around for that long.
Hadn’t even gotten as far my second paycheck. Just finished setting up my insurance and was excited to finally be covered again, so I wouldn’t neglect going to the doctors and getting my medication. My wife and I finally were on stable footing with jobs we both enjoyed (or at least I thought my job was going to be anyway).
Looks like it’s back to food service or retail again. Be careful with contract positions, especially ones involving federal contracts. My previous experience working on a federal contract was very consistent, but now I realize that isn’t always a guarantee.
Im not trying to turn this into venting or asking for sympathy. Its just I’ve lurked here for awhile, and I’ve always believed the stories people tell about getting fucked over. But now I’m feeling it for myself, and it’s crazy. I feel powerless. I understood that I’m completely at the mercy of people who don’t care. But now I really understand how it feels.
