We all know that parental leave in the US is the worst because it is basically non-existent. However, if you are lucky enough to work for a good company, you may still qualify for some benefits… so I thought.
My wife is a nurse and after working at a clinic that was constantly short staffed (nurses were crazy overworked like most nurses are), she switched companies. Her new company offered short term disability which we paid for because we had just become pregnant and disability pays 60% salary once you have a kid. She also had short term disability at her old company the 4 years she worked there.
We just had our child and once we filed a claim for short term disability, we were denied because pregnancy is a “preexisting condition”! Are you f***ing kidding me?! Researched this online and this is a common thing that insurance companies do. So basically, if you start a new job and have a baby within 9 months, you get nothing, not even short term disability. You are on your own.
