I have two college degrees but am struggling to find a job in my field that pays more than a certain arts and crafts/home goods retailer so I thought I would give it a shot while I continued my job search. I was not prepared for the exploitation at this retailer and have no idea why anyone works there.
I applied for what was sold to me as a sales position but quickly realized that this was sales, freight, stocking and front end. This is four jobs. As a five foot two inch woman, I don't know what made these people think i could spend 11 hours unloading a 53 foot truck filled with things like furniture. I don't know why you wouldn't mention that this is a huge part of the job DURING THE INTERVIEW. Not just a huge part of the job. It is literally the bulk of the job.
Speaking of 11 hours… This place also schedules you for an 11 hour shift on the day you're expected to unload the truck and then various like, 6 hour shifts throughout the week so that you only ever make it to 36 hours a week. Why? Because on Saturdays, despite what your schedule says, they expect to keep you as late as necessary to stock shelves and they don't want to have to pay overtime for it. I'm sorry, but if I'm going to work two 11-12 hours shifts during a 5 day workweek, there better be overtime involved.
Also notable – the schedule is only ever posted the Thursday before the start of the week. I asked someone how you're supposed to plan for things like doctor appointments if you never know your schedule more than three days before the start of the week and I was told that you need to request off for appointments like those…. Two weeks in advance. So you don't have to give me more than three days but I have to give you 2 weeks?
Also, my second day on the job I was told that the following day I would have to change my hours to later than the ones initially posted. In that case, they gave me…. 13 hours notice? What if I had prior plans?
Why would anyone accept this kind of exploitation? No wonder the CEO is a billionaire. He has one person working in for positions without a dime of overtime.
Anyway I quit after four days. When I called and told the manager why he said don't feel bad, it happens all the time. I don't feel bad bro, but you should.
