You guys ever had a new boss that cannibalizes all the energy in the room? You know, the type that just won’t stop talking about positivity?. The one who thinks they’re going to change the workplace culture for the better and their idea of better came from a workplace theory on improving employee satisfaction without pay raises that they got from a textbook? The type that loves to emphasize positivity in the face of increasingly demanding workloads and being short staffed?
My new boss loves to ride their caffeine buzz around touting “positive” vibes while neglecting their responsibilities and shoving them down the throats of their subordinates. They came in with a “new attitude” about what their job should be, and what our job descriptions got wrong. They neglected their job duties in favor of changing the work culture. And now they are getting dunked on by the powers that be, rightfully so, but not for the right reasons.
Why are they taking flack? Because they didn’t do their job. They delegated their responsibilities to others like it was their job. They spent more effort chatting up the staff (who just want to do their jobs in peace), than they do on their own tasks.
They have a scapegoat (someone who has neglected to do even the most basic aspects of their job for the past several months) but blaming them isn’t working. My new boss’s boss isn’t happy with their performance. Why? Because the client isn’t happy. It’s karmic but it does nothing for me. Why?
We haven’t received an inflation raise since Covid. The cost of living here (which was already very high) has skyrocketed. We are understaffed, partly because we don’t provide employee housing or housing assistance, and partly because our wages aren’t that competitive in high COL area. My new boss is increasing our workloads. They told me the other day we would make the added workloads “fun.” And on top of all of that, my new boss won’t shut the fuck up while we’re trying to get our actual jobs done.
This is happening within a profitable piece of a growth-oriented publicly traded company that isn’t profitable overall. We (the piece) profited throughout Covid in an industry that didn’t. We (the employees) didn’t reap the benefits. I received a thank you card in the mail for my efforts.
My new boss, who loves to push people to be positive, has missed the point entirely. They won’t be here for long. They’ll get another cushy job. The company will pay another MBA to come in and do the same instead of addressing the real issue.
Pay your employees a wage that allows them to live comfortably and you won’t need an over-educated caffeine addict to try and bring “positive vibes” to the workplace. We don’t need someone to push us to act happy. We need a job that allows us to have solid work-life balance, pay our bills, take vacations, and plan for retirement.
Until that day comes when corporate greed takes a backseat to employee livelihood, fuck you very much you “positivity” pushing fuck who makes more than us but doesn’t do their job. You are a corporate shill, and we see through you.
