Lack of trade training, despite massive “shortage” of tradesmen?

I genuinely like to work, but living in a metro like Las Vegas it’s almost impossible to find Full time work, and if you do, it’s gonna be around $10-12.50 hourly. I’ve worked in food the past few years since it’s one of our higher paying areas where I can do alright, but I’ve tried getting into the trades on multiple occasions to no avail. I’m typically referred to Unions, who offer free apprenticeships w/ classes nightly while you work in the field as well, they sound great until you realize they only pick up new apprentices every other year and maybe pick 30-100 people out of a few thousand applications, not to mention it’s very hard to keep up w/ multiple unions publications on when they offer these programs.

Next I had looked into school to be an Aviation Mechanic as there’s a reputable place here and have read it would be a lucrative career, unfortunately the tuition would be around 40-45k not including the interest on the loans and that amount of debt scares me

Same w/ my local community college charging 25k for an automotive technician course, and though many shops claim to hire without experience and offer training, I’ve yet to receive an interview for any of the applications I’ve submitted(I’m sure cause I work in food I couldn’t possibly know anything about cars)

So it leads me to question, are we going to run into a true mass shortage of tradesmen?

It seems very hard to get into a field that has been dubbed by most as dirty and undesirable, I’d imagine you’d wanna offer more to attract what small percentage of people may be interested in these fields, not deter any possible candidates by charging them for education that used to be paid for by the employer.
