Learning the difference of a boss and a leader the hard way

In a few days I'll be out of job. I was in this banking company for a few months so I was still in probation meaning they can easily let me off with any reason they have. I was called by my manager to his cubicle to discuss my job performance. I was a bit surprised because I was still a new hire but apparently it was the process here that they failed to be onboard me on. My first day I pretty much just read a bunch of slides and met my manager on the 2nd day but regarding the standard processes of my role and team it was pretty much just up to me to figure it out. I was a bit surprised because I was still a new hire but apparently it was the process here that they failed to be onboard me on. My first day I pretty much just read a bunch of slides and met my manager on the 2nd day but regarding the standard processes of my role and team it was pretty much just up to me to figure it out.

When I candidly explained that I had some challenges because I was assigned to managing the testing of a project that was already in its 30-something sprint with a ton of backlog since they didn't really do anything about it for almost a year. I tried to make some form of process to remedy that but I was a bit confused on how to handle it. To be honest I was a bit complacent about it but I was also not in any danger of any escalations. He kind of got furious, insisting on why I didn't do certain things and even insiniuated that I didn't know what I was doing. But my problem was that methodology he kept on pushing won't work granted to giant backlog of testing needed that won't work in the Agile way he wanted.

I realized my mistake now. He clearly was not a listener and was really unhappy that I was not up to his standards. It may have looked like I'll be regularized initially but because I brought things up that I didn't have to, I kind of fucked things up.

So yeah instead of probably providing a bit of support on what I can do to remedy this I was just kept being told that as a senior ranker that I should have already led and turned around the team. Even though my job role has nothing to do with people management and I have no real authority towards my teammates.

Now after being vague about my job status for a week, here I am now working on my clearance. I guess the lesson I need to learn is to really shape things up but also to gauge if your manager is a leader or a boss. So I found my boomer boss who seemed to be a nice guy in front just expected me to be a complete expert and pioneer in less than 3 months of being here. Oh well.
