Yesterday, I found out that my new direct report, who has less than 1/2 of my experience, only an undergrad degree (I have a similar undergrad as well as two graduates business degrees and a graduate certificate) has the exact same compensation package as me (his newly promoted manager).
I was just promoted to a people manager position this last week after over two years at the company.
However, his offer existed before mine and my offer was made with the knowledge that he would become my direct report. I didn’t negotiate my promotion salary because I was nervous to do so and I thought that they’d made a fair offer (not great, but ok).
But now, as a manager, I just found out this new employee’s compensation package and it’s literally the same as mine.
I’m so confused about what to do. How do I go back and say this is absolute garbage?
